From the magazine Présence africaine to Revue noire, ‘Paris noir’ traces the presence and influence of Black artists in France between the 1940s and 2000. It highlights 150 Afro-descendant artists, from Africa to the Americas, whose works have often never been shown in France. A revelation of a cosmopolitan Paris, the exhibition shows how the Parisian scene has given rise to a wide variety of practices, ranging from identity awareness to the search for transcultural visual languages. ‘Black Paris’ reveals the importance of Afro-descendant artists in redefining modernity and post-modernity.
