As part of its project to explore fashion and the representation of the body, the Musée des Arts Décoratifs is presenting an exhibition devoted to hair and body hair in the Western world. This exhibition shows how hairstyles and the arrangement of human hair have played a part in the construction of appearances for centuries. An essential element of self-staging, the arrangement of hair conveys a message, adherence to a fashion, a conviction, a protest, and can carry a multitude of meanings, such as femininity, virility or negligence.
