Born in Nanjing in 1946, Jiang Dahai is one of the major figures of abstraction in China. Successively trained at the Central Academy of Fine Arts of China in Beijing and in Paris at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts, he spent twenty-two years in France before returning to China in 2008. His pictorial practice is linked to both the landscape tradition of classical Chinese painting and that of Western abstraction. However, in a minimalist and monochrome inflection, he extends and profoundly renews the nature of the dialogue undertaken by the Chinese artists trained in Paris during the last century, such as Zao Wou-Ki and Chu Teh-Chun.
