From June 13 to September 22, the Centre Pompidou is giving carte blanche to German artist Wolfgang Tillmans. Taking over the 6,000 sq. m of the Bibliothèque publique d'information (Bpi), Tillmans transforms the space through a curatorial experiment that places his work in dialogue with the library, questioning it both as architecture and as a place for the transmission of knowledge. The retrospective explores more than thirty-five years of artistic practice across a range of photographic genres, including portraiture, still life, architecture, documentary and abstraction. His work takes a wide variety of forms, playing on the verticality of walls and the horizontality of tables, defying all attempts of categorization. In addition to his photographic work, Tillmans integrates moving image, music, sound and text into this vast installation, with contributions from performance artists.
