From the magazine Présence africaine to Revue noire, ‘Paris noir’ traces the presence and influence of Black artists in France between the 1940s and 2000. It highlights one hundred and fifty Afro-descendant artists, from Africa to the Americas, whose works have often never been shown in France. A revelation of a cosmopolitan Paris, the exhibition shows how the Parisian scene has given rise to a wide variety of practices, ranging from identity awareness to the search for transcultural visual languages. ‘Paris noir’ reveals the importance of Afro-descendant artists in redefining modernity and post-modernity.

The exhibition explores the crossroads between surrealism, ethnology and archaeology during the interwar period in France, focusing on the question of what to do with objects. The experimental approach of the artists and literary revisers of the period gave rise to a new perception of objects and places. They challenged the very concept of the museum by asking: What is art? What makes an object a work of art?
