Born on Java island, Melati Suryodarmo is a leading figure for long-term performance art, Indonesia. As her mother is a traditional dancer and her father teaches Amerta, an artistic form of dance movement, she was immersed in a world of art and culture and learned several types of meditation, including Sumarah, a local practice that aims to develop sensitiveness and acceptance through deep relaxation of the body, senses and mind. This cultural heritage is reflected in his contemporary work, which is also heavily influenced by theatre plays and movie-making.
