Sam Szafran (1934-2019) has a very singular place in the history of art of the second half of the 20th century. He dedicated his work to a figurative and poetic/icconic approach to reality that he developed far from the art world and its trends, in the seclusion of the studio. Three years after the artist's death, the Musée de l'Orangerie highlights, in the first exhibition dedicated to the artist by a French museum in two decades, the few existential subjects that exist according to the artist – namely workshops, staircases and foliage - which all have his immediate environment.

Gérard Garouste is a painter, decorator, set designer, illustrator, sculptor and engraver. From the beginning of the 1980s, he embodied the return to figuration, as did the German neo-expressionists and the artists of the Italian trans-avant-garde at the same time. His painting is a reflection on the universal and the timeless, on love, death, wisdom and madness and is opposed to conceptual art. For Garouste "the painting belongs to the viewer, not to the maker". In other words, he paints much less for himself than for others. Painting "is not an end in itself, but a means of accessing knowledge", he acknowledges. Art makes it possible to express the inexpressible, to reveal what would otherwise remain hidden.
