Takesada Matsutani

Visit
Takesada Matsutani and curator Christine Macel with ‘Circle Yellow-19’ (2019) at Centre Pompidou, Paris, 2019 © Takesada Matsutani

In the company of Curator Christine Macel

The exhibition invites you to discover sixty years of Takesada Matsutani’s career, with the first major restrospective in France of this Japanese artist, living and working in Paris since 1966. It retraces his rich and singular development and highlights the artist’s remarkable donation to the Centre Pompido of twenty-two works dating from the late 1950s to the present day, . The exhibition also pays unprecedented tribute to Matsutani’s original artistic adventure: constantly experimenting with organic matter and its links to the spiritual, he has never ceased to seek out his “internal image”.

City Prince/sse/s

Visit
Prince·sse·s des villes © Marc Domage

In the company of Curator Hugo Vitrani and Fabien Danesi

The exhibition City Prince/sses is presented as an imaginary, multiple and complex city, without borders, messy, staggering and creative: an unpredictable laboratory, which is always in motion and being (re)constructed. Visual artists, creators, fashion designers, experimenters, tattooists, musicians: a good fifty artists are presented without any geographical grouping, mostly via new productions and in situ interventions.

Artist’s studio – Françoise Petrovitch

Artist Atelier
Dans l'atelier de l'artiste peintre Françoise Pétrovitch Courtesy Semiose Galerie - © Hervé Plumet

Meet the visual artist Françoise Petrovitch, a few weeks before the opening of her exhibition at the Galerie des Enfants at the Centre Pompidou (opening on October 19th). Since the 90s, Françoise Pétrovitch has created a singular and strong work through numerous media, of which painting is today one of the most striking. Playing with formats and with a constantly evolving work, Françoise Pétrovitch reveals an ambiguous world, silent and often disturbing, mocking conventional boundaries and trespassing temporal categories. The intimate and the collective, the day-to-day and the universal, animals and humans, childhood and adolescence intertwine, exploring the absence, the fragment, the disparition.

Day-Trip – Centre Pompidou-Metz

Journey
© Centre Pompidou-Metz

In the company of Director Emma Lavigne

This day-trip to Metz will be the occasion to discover several exhbitions. “Rebecca Horn. Theatre of Metamorphoses” highlights the rich range of forms of expression used by Rebecca Horn. The retrospective “Lee Ufan. Inhabiting time” retraces Ufan’s career from the early works of the late 1960s to his most recent creations. Finally, “Opera as the World The quest for a total work of art” testifies to the encounter between the visual arts and opera in the 20th and 21st centuries.

Fondation d’entreprise Ricard Prize

Visit
Le Fil d’Alerte © Fondation d’Entreprise Ricard

Since 1999, the Ricard Foundation has been honouring a young emerging artist from the French scene. This year, Claire Le Restif has been chosen to curate the Foundation’s 21st award to one of the nominated artists : Marcos Avila Forero (1983), Eva Barto (1987), Simon Boudvin (1979), Corentin Canesson (1988), Gaëlle Choisne (1985), Kapwani Kiwanga (1978), Paul Maheke (1985), Estefania Penafiel-Loaiza (1978), Sarah Tritz (1980). The exhibition “Le Fil d’Alerte” offers a temporary cohabitation of the work of these 13 artists and should be a choral exhibition (stemming from a spiral vision) that establishes “community”. This year again, the award recipient will see their work exhibited at the Centre Pompidou and join our collection.

Résistance-Existence, manifestation revendiquant la gratuité des transports pour les chômeurs Place du Châtelet, Paris, 1er décembre 1994 Marc Pataut © Ne Pas Plier-APEIS-Marc Pataut

The exhibition by Marc Pataut (born in Paris in 1952) presents a corpus of around fifteen photographic series, some of which are being exhibited for the first time. The artist’s work explores the individual’s relationship both to themselves and to society. His pictures reveal faces, bodies, affiliations and life stories. Linked to specific sites and regions, his projects grow organically over long periods and are nourished by an accumulation of personal and collective experiences.

Sonja Ferlov Mancoba + Ernest Mancoba

Visit
Sonja Ferlov Mancoba, travaillant sur The Little Careful One dans son atelier à Gudhjem, sur l'île de Bornholm au Danemark, en 1951 © Adagp, Paris 2019

In company of Curator Jonas Storsve and Alicia Knock Centre Pompidou

The Centre Pompidou continues its work of sheding light on non-Western artists often little known to the general public. Married in Paris and sharing the same Parisian studio, Ernest Mancoba and Sonja Ferlov Mancoba will be given recognition by the Centre Pompidou in two distinct spaces, in order to pay tribute to the breadth of their practices, inseparable and yet singular. Discover the first full retrospective in France of the work of Sonja Ferlov Mancoba (1911-1984). Starting in the 1930s, Sonja Ferlov Mancoba produced a body of sculptural and pictorial work that was both profoundly personal and at the same time connected to 20th-century Danish and international artistic movements. At the crossroads between abstract and figurative forms, her sculptures and drawings were created using a large body of references, from African and Pre-Colombian art to Surrealism. Anthropomorphic, her works unveil a way of seeing the individual as a being that is perpetually evolving, refashioning the body’s borders, both in terms of the material and metaphysical, the formal and spiritual. The exhibition dedicated to Ernest Mancoba is unprecedented, opening up considerable thinking on a landmark figure in the debates on racial marginality and erasure, and more broadly in discourses reframing modernity. It is a unique opportunity for the Centre Pompidou to present a major career that has remained absent from previous exhibitions on these issues in France (“Magiciens de la terre,” “Africa Remix”).

Encounter with Arthur Hoffner

Meeting
Arthur Hoffner © Ateliers Médicis

Arthur Hoffner, winner of the 2017 Prix du Public at the Design Parade of the Villa Noailles (Hyères) and awarded the 2018 FoRTE fund for emerging talents, has here reimagined the indoor fountain. At Sèvres, he has transformed this object into a surprising creation straddling design and art. Arthur Hoffner’s fountains, created during his residency at the Manufacture, are exhibited at the Sèvres Gallery. This exhibition presents three variations of the fountain imagined by Arthur Hoffner. These unique pieces or limited editions (depending on the model) combine Sèvres porcelain with marble and brass. Colours, forms and materials associated with the sound of water and the rich symbolism of the fountain delightfully stir the senses, while mischievously deceiving the eye…

Laurent Grasso, « OTTO », 2018. HD film. Duration : 00:21:26 | 00:21:26. Edition of 5. Courtesy Perrotin

“All observation is a partial way of apprehending reality. The work of Laurent Grasso explores the interstices of this partial observation, that is, the spaces of uncertainty or doubt aroused by any conjecture, whether in the field of science, history, perception or belief, in order to construct parallel realities capable of testing our system of knowledge and our critical capacity. For him, the point is not to test the truth of our suppositions, but to exploit their fractures and tensions, and make them the raw material of his work. Observation, but also control, surveillance, the power or domination of science or belief, as well as the simultaneity or reversibility of time, are among the fields he explores. By extending the relation between the known and the unknown, or contracting the distance between the visible and the unverifiable, Grasso reveals the asymmetry between seeing and being seen.” Marta Gili

For the second edition, Paris la Défense offers an atypical path of contemporary art curated by Fabrice Bousteau. “Les Extatiques” continues to highlight the district by sublimating through artistic interpretations the many facets of La Défense. These new works, temporarily present in the area, also come to echo the permanent collection of the district. The 73 works that compose it bring together major artists of the twentieth century such as Caro, Serra or Miró, with varied currents, but all representative of contemporary art.

Francis Bacon

Visit
Francis Bacon, « Triptych » (détail), 1970

In company of Curator Didier Ottinger

After the exhibitions showcasing Marcel Duchamp, René Magritte, André Derain and Henri Matisse, the Centre Pompidou continues its re-examination of key 20th century works by devoting a major exhibition to Francis Bacon. The last major French exhibition of this artist’s work was held in 1996 at the Centre Pompidou. More than twenty years later, Francis Bacon: Books and Painting presents paintings dating from 1971, the year of the retrospective event at the national galleries of the Grand Palais, to his final works in 1992. Didier Ottinger is the curator of this innovative exploration of the influence of literature in Francis Bacon’s painting.

What links did Pablo Picasso maintain with the Mediterranean space? This exhibition gives an overview of the life and work of Pablo Picasso in the Mediterranean by showing the richness of links uniting Picasso with this geographical area. Thanks to innovative audio-visual equipment and a collection of exceptional works, the exhibition allows us to contemplate the Mediterranean of the Spanish artist in a poetic and immersive way, from the landscapes he painted of the ports in Malaga and Barcelona to the works of his later years, via Antibes and Vallauris in the sun-drenched Midi. His Mediterranean influences will also be highlighted, from the Iberian pre-historic to Ancient Greece and the Orient, via North Africa. Based on the richness of the Musée national Picasso-Paris collections, and their archives and photographs in particular, as well as masterpieces presented in Paris for the first time, the exhibition aims to contrast the ‘Picasso-Mediterranean’ event that has brought together more than seventy institutions in ten Mediterranean countries and three million visitors since 2017.

Clay Apenouvon took part in painting, graphic design and screen printing workshops in Togo before settling in Paris where he continued his art education with artists Claude Viallat and Mounir Fatmi. After having been interested in cardboard as a material, Clay Apenouvon develops the concept of “Plastic Attack” to challenge the public about the harmfulness of plastics. More recently, with the project “Black Film of Lampedusa”, he denounces the indifference of Europe to the tragedies of illegal immigration. He uses stretchable black film to create in situ installations whose evocative power is particularly powerful.

As visual artist and stage director, Théo Mercier explores the intersection of anthropology, ethnography, geopolitics and tourism. Between choreographed mises en scène and material explorations, he combines the practices of the creator and the collector, using them to establish an abundant exchange between the past, the present and the future, the animate and the inanimate, the true and the false, the artisanal and the industrial, the secular and the sacred, reality and fiction.
