Stéphane Mandelbaum

Visit
Stéphane Mandelbaum, « Francis Bacon », 1980, Collection particulière

In company of Curator Anne Montfort

Stéphane Mandelbaum is one of the most disruptive figures of the 1980s art scene. Through around 100 artworks, this exhibition outlines, in story form, the eventful fate of the young Belgian artist, who was assassinated at the age of just 25. Stéphane Mandelbaum’s extension of artistic references and association with art brut now makes his work seem oddly contemporary, in its ability to transcend genres.

Clay Apenouvon

Artist Atelier
Clay Apenouvon « Film noir, le ver est dans le fruit », 2017. Courtesy de l’artiste et Mariane Ibrahim Gallery, Seattle © Pascale Odile © Thibaut Voisin

Clay Apenouvon participated in painting, graphic arts and screen-printing workshops in Togo before moving to Paris where he continued his initiation with artists Claude Viallat and Mounir Fatmi. After exploring cardboard as a material, he developed the concept ‘Plastic Attack’ to raise public awareness of the harmfulness of plastic. More recently with the “Film noir de Lampedusa”, he denounced the indifference of Europe faced with the tragedy of illegal immigration. He used black stretch film to create an exceptionally powerful and evocative in situ installation.

Katinka Bock

Meeting
Vue_Katinka_Bock_©Johannes_Schwartz_Mudam_Luxembourg_539

The work of Katinka Bock uses different types of materials – wood, metal, stone -, but also found objects. Here, the sculptural motion is often accompanied by natural elements – warmth, humidity, sunlight – as well as time effects, so that the work always seems in a sort of provisory suspense in an ongoing transformation process. The success of her sculptures stems from their simultaneous precarious and immuable character. In the european landscape, Bock singularly assumes arte povera’s heritage and a form of post-minimalism.

Picasso-Calder

Visit
Calder Foundation New York / ADAGP, Paris / RMN-Grand Palais - Béatrice Hatala / Succession Picasso 2018

In company of Curator Claire Garnier

The exhibition will comprise approximately 120 works that explore how these two artists, each in their own very different ways, engaged with the void and defied the movement of masses.
Calder and Picasso wanted to present or represent non-space, whether by giving definition to a subtraction of mass, as in Calder’s sculpture, or by expressing contortions of time, as in Picasso’s portraits. Calder externalized the void through curiosity and intellectual expansion, engaging unseen forces in ways that challenge dimensional limitations, or what he called -grandeur-immense-. Picasso personalized the exploration, focusing on the emotional inner self. He brought himself inside each character and collapsed the interpersonal space between author and subject.

In company of Curator Cécile Debray

The Centre Pompidou is staging an original exhibition presenting the ties uniting prehistory with modern and contemporary art. The exhibition demonstrates how, in the great period of crisis called « modernity », first artists, then society as a whole, felt drawn to their « origins » and how a fantasy vision was built up of « what preceded History ».

Thu Van Tran

Meeting
© Fonderie Coubertin : Leslie Martinelli

In company of Curator Alicia Knock

Thu Van Tran, born in 1979 in Ho Chi Minh City, drew on her own experience as a Vietnamese women living in France to explore the question of physical and cultural displacement, especially through episodes in colonial history.
For “24 hours in Hanoï” she conceived an unusual metaphor inspired by the spirit of the eighty-two wise turtles, the guardians of Vietnam’s poetic and scholarly heritage, located in Hanoi’s Temple of Literature. Here, as in all of her work, she introduces aesthetic experience as a modality of a possible rereading of history ; wonderment as a counterpoint to violence. In 2018, a set of her works entered the collections of the Mnam-Centre Pompidou. She has also been selected among four finalists for the coveted Marcel Duchamp Prize the same year.

Visit
Paul Heintz au Salon de Montrouge 2015

In company of Curator Ami Barak

The 64th edition of the Salon de Montrouge offers the opportunity to witness the abounding creative energy in France. Recently graduate artists, the exhibition reveals figures from diverse cultural backgrounds, attested by the presence of creators coming from the rest of Europe, Africa, Asia or America. Vincent Le Bourdon, who again designed the scenography, has imagined a sequence of modular spaces, destined to welcome each artistic project and divided into four territories : “what we are together and what the others are not”, “the laboratory of counterpowers”, “the contained form or the content implies”, “the real catching up to reality”

Visit
Luigi Ghirri, Salzburg 1977, Collection privée. Courtesy Matthew Marks Gallery. © Succession Luigi Ghirri

In company of Director Quentin Bajac

Luigi Ghirri had an unshakeable fascination for representations of the world, for reproductions, pictures, posters, models and maps, and for the way in which these representations were incorporated into the world, as signs in the heart of the city or in the landscape. This first retrospective of photographs taken outside his native Italy by Luigi Ghirri focuses on the 1970s. It covers a decade in which Luigi Ghirri produced a corpus of colour photographs unparalleled in Europe at that time.

The Parcours Saint-Germain

75006 Paris
Parcours
My Lan Hoang Thuy, Sans titre (fleurs), 2018

The Parcours Saint-Germain takes hold of the neighbourhood’s most iconic places, where art is present at every street corner. The 19th edition of the Parcours honours “La Fleur de l’Art”. From white lilies representing the Virgin Mary to Takashi Murakami’s colourful flowers, from Renaissance paintings to Robert Mapplethorpe’s shots, a vast garden blooms endlessly in the art world.

In company of chief heritage curator Cécile Debray

Taking a multi-disciplinary approach that combines the history of art and the history of ideas, this exhibition explores aesthetic, political, social and racial issues as well as the imagery unveiled by the representation of black figures in visual arts, from the abolition of slavery in France (1794) to the modern day. The exhibition primarily focuses on the question of models, and therefore the dialogue between the artist who paints, sculpts, engraves or photographs and the model who poses.

Metamorphosis. Art in Europe Now

Visit
Vue de l'exposition Jeunes Artistes en Europe. Les Métamorphoses, Fondation Cartier pour l'art contemporain, Paris, 2019. © George Rouy. Photo © Luc Boegly.

In company of Curator Thomas Delamarre

Over the course of a year, the Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain team set out to meet with young artists from all over Europe, beyond the borders of the European Union. This ambitious research project brought the team to 29 countries, discovering over 200 artists chosen from a preliminary selection of nearly 1,000 creators. Launched without any preconceived ideas or guiding principles, this search culminated in a deliberately restricted selection of 21 artists from 16 countries, who use painting, sculpture, fashion, design or film as their modes of expression. Born between 1980 and 1994, they came of age after the fall of the Berlin Wall, and together demonstrate the extraordinary dynamism of the continent’s artistic scene. Most of them have studied or live in a country other than where they were born, showing the very real mobility that exists within the European cultural space. For the vast majority, this is their first exhibition in an international institution.

Dora Maar

Visit

In company of Curators Karolina Ziebinska-Lewandowska and Damarice Amao

Although a well-known figure, Dora Maar remains an enigmatic artist, with crucial aspects of her career as a professional and surrealist photographer in the 1930s and subsequently as a painter still to be discovered. The exhibition showcases the breadth and proficiency of her work in an effort to reposition her as an artist in her own right, rather than regard her as model or muse—roles that she has historically been relegated to as a result of her intimate relationship with Pablo Picasso.
